Skincare Talk: How I Take Care Oily + Acne-prone Skin

Updated: Aug 9, 2022

My skin type is oily and acne-prone, and I suffered from regularly ance problems since my teenage years and early 20s. I likely experience breakouts frequently and have visible oil throughout my face even I put on powder to set my makeup. Hence, lightweight hydration is key to me! Sometimes, the skin will over-compensate for lack of moisture by producing more oil. Double cleanse to clear pores of impurities, then exfoliate with BHAs like salicylic acid or willow bark extract to help unclog pores, and vitamin C to even and brighten my skin tone. Finally, hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe and panthenol will help balance oil production.

My main skin concern is oiliness/clogged pores. While oily skin is considered a skin type, anybody can suffer from over-production of oil or clogged pores. My first step should be a double cleanse that focuses on thinning sebum, unclogging pores and removing impurities. Equally important to incorporate into your routine are gentle exfoliants like BHAs, which help unclog pores, as well as humectants, which help hydrate the skin and keep oil production in check.

Remove Makeup

I use the Garnier Essential Express Eye Makeup Remover to remove my eye makeup and the Garnier Micellar Water Facial Cleanser and Makeup Remover for Sensitive Skin to remove the rest of the makeup.

Cleansing

I use the Neutrogena Clear & Defend Plus Facial Wash to cleanse my skin. When I found this product at Boots, I was very excited to try it as it contains all the ingredients, such as salicylic acid and AHA/PHA, which work by helping the skin to shed dead cells from the top layer, helping to improve skin tone and texture. I noticed my complexion felt smoother and less congested.

Exfoliation

Glow Tonic from Pixi is my holy grail for years. After washing my face, just simply with a cotton pad and apply it to my skin. The Glow Tonic contains glycolic acid, working to gently exfoliate your skin, deeply cleansing pores to promote an appearance with the look of blemishes and breakouts drastically minimised.

Eye Cream

I grew up having puffy, tired-looking eyes when I woke up every morning, this Cerave Eye Repair Cream is formulated with beneficial ingredients—like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide, which help reduce puffiness and dark circle in the delicate eye area. Plus, this is fragrance-free!

Moisturiser

My go-to is Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion, the ultra-lightweight formula moisturises skin and it contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides which are the holy grail ingredients that my oily and acne-prone skin love.

Mask

I've repurchased this Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré four times already. I love using it as primer, moisturiser, and repairing mask and it smells really nice. It is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins. My skin feels moistured and pumped after using it overnight.
